Two significant events took place in 1969: on 20 July Neil Armstrong took man’s first step on the surface of the Moon and, albeit on a smaller scale and entirely influenced by our bias for mechanical watches, on 10 January the watchmaking world got wind of the first fully integrated high-frequency chronograph movement. Today Zenith releases another revival of the A384 decked out in red, white and blue exclusively for the North American market in a limited run of 150 watches. With its tonneau-shaped case and panda dial, the A384 was a true child of its time and captured the zeitgeist of the Age of Aquarius to a tee.

One of these was the famous reference A384. Following the introduction of the calibre in 1969, a trilogy of watches was released bearing the winning chronograph movement. There were only 2600 of these watches made between 19.Zenith celebrated an important milestone last year when the world’s first high-frequency automatic chronograph movement, the El Primero calibre, turned fifty. It has a straight-line lever escapement, a monometallic balance that's adjusted to 5 positions, a self-compensating flat balance spring, and an index regulator. The rare mechanical automatic self-winding Zenith "El Primero" caliber 3019 PHC / 400 movement is rhodium-plated with fausses cotes embellishment. The 13mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. It has a date aperture window between 4 and 5 o'clock. There is a small seconds subsidiary dial at 9 o'clock, a 12-hour sub dial at 6 o'clock, and a 30-minute register at 3 o'clock. The hands are silver and there are applied faceted baton hour marker indexes with a creamy patina, an outer minute/second ring, and a center red chronograph hand. It has the original white Panda tropical dial with black sub dials and an outer tachymeter scale that have patinated to an even tropical brown color. The 37mm diameter sharp three-body solid case, downturned lugs, and flat arched bezel are polished/brushed. It has a snap-on solid case back with a raised Zenith logo that reveals an acrylic exhibition display crystal, and round chronograph pushbuttons.

It has a shell cordovan strap with a stainless steel Zenith buckle, and an acrylic glass crystal. More about Vintage El Primero TROPICAL Dial SS / Leather
